talent is, creating awareness and generating a buzz about
you and your music, and ultimately getting it out of the
trunk of your car and into the hands of your fans, is
a huge undertaking and involves much time and dedication.
This responsibility, unless you have a record company
backing you, falls into yours, the artists, lap.
Unfortunately, the days of major record deals are in decline.
In a highly competitive music marketplace the major labels
have been forced to only sign acts that are already established
and who have sold tens of thousands of cds on their own.
Essentially the days of major labels finding raw talent
and grooming them, otherwise known as "artist development",
are over.
Add to this the digital revolution of the music marketplace
which has caused major retailers to close their doors
for good, getting a 'record deal' seems more of a fantasy
than a probability for most aspiring artists. The Good News Is... Never before has it been
so possible for you to make it as an independent artist.
In the olden days, singers were completely dependant on
their record label. An artist might be a one-hit wonder
and hope to live off the royalties that their hit song
generated, even after being dropped by their label. Today
many artists careers are able to operate independently,
outside of the traditional record deal.
Never before has a recording artist been able to be so
pro-active about their career, from producing and recording
their own music, to manufacturing their own cds, networking,
self-distributing their music digitally and physically
on-line, setting up their own tours, marketing themselves,
etc. This is the time of the 'Working Class Artist'.
However, what is the emerging artist to do when they are
not yet big enough to garner the interest from a record
label and, at the same time, aren't interested in spending
the necessary hours on the phone or at the computer handling
the necessary administration that comes with developing
their act?
